Life at UTC

Term Dates

We follow the same term dates as other schools in the County Durham area.

2023 – 2024 Calendar

2024 – 2025 Calendar

The school day

Our student registration and official end of day are below. All Year 10 and 11 students will remain on site during these times unless they are on a visit.

Our site opens at 7:30am and closes at 5pm.

Transport

Students travel in a range of different ways from across the North East to access our education. To assist with travel, we currently provide six different buses for students to access. Whilst families are required to pay for a space on these buses we heavily subsidize the overall cost.

More information regarding routes and cost will be given to families attending our open evening and emailed to students who are offered places with us.

Students can also travel to UTC in the following ways:

  • Walk
  • Cycle
  • Train (via Heighington station)
  • Public Bus

Food

We have an experienced catering team who supply an excellent range of quality food at breaks and lunchtimes. Students pay for food and drink using their student card which money is uploaded onto via ParentPay.

Our lunchtime menu changes each term – an example menu can be viewed below.

Our building has water fountains on each floor ensuring that students are able to access drinking water at any point during the day.

SEN and Student Support

We value the abilities and achievements of each student and are committed to providing the best possible learning environment. We ensure:

  • All students have access to a board curriculum
  • Adapt the curriculum to suit each students ability and interests
  • Provide rapid identification of students requiring SEND provision as early as possible
  • Ensure parents of SEND students are regularly updated with their progress

Our building is very accessible with ramped entry for wheelchairs and a lift to all floors. All of our learning spaces are equipped to cater for the needs of every student.

Our SEN Director is Jak Heslop and can be contacted via email on jak.heslop@utcsouthdurham.org.

There are always adults for pupils to turn to for help and support. Pupils are listened to and valued
