As leader of the SEND team at UTC South Durham, it is my mission to ensure that we provide the support and the learning environment necessary so that all students, especially those with SEND, achieve to their potential.  We aim to equip them with the skills necessary to become successful and aspirational learners, ready to leave UTC South Durham career and life ready.

I graduated from Sheffield University in 1992 with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, and moved on to post- graduate research at Cranfield University, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence.  I began my teaching career almost 30 years ago as a Teacher of Science.  I taught Science and A-Level Chemistry in 2 schools across Co Durham and Teesside, before taking on the role of Head of Science at Parkside School, Willington, where I worked for 12 years.  During this time, I developed my passion for encouraging students to consider a career within the STEM sector, and worked closely with local Universities and Industries to share this enthusiasm, particularly with girls.

I was lucky enough to be involved in UTC South Durham from the very start, and began my time here as a Faculty Director of Learning.  I have led a variety of curriculum teams, developed Teaching and Learning across the UTC, co-ordinated our PSHE offer, and established our inclusive practices.  Over the past 8 years my teaching focus has moved towards Physics, but most importantly I found my love of supporting SEND students to be the best they can.  Having completed my NASENCO qualification, I now lead a team of 5 fantastic teaching assistants and work closely with teaching staff to ensure that SEND students are given every opportunity to achieve and to take part in all aspects of UTC life.  I am also the Designated Teacher responsible for children who are in the care of their Local Authority.

Outside of work, I love to travel with my husband and 2 teenage children, and to socialise with friends.
