Mechanical Engineering and Design (Tech Level)

At UTC, we offer Mechanical Engineering and Design as a Cambridge Technical Level. Cambridge Technical Levels are vocational qualifications for students aged 16+. They are designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A-Levels. This course is worth the equivalant of two A-levels and can be studied alongside another A-Level or Level 3 course.

A Vocational education is not just about results, it is also about educating people in the knowledge and skills required for employment and for the community as a whole. It develops the behaviours and attributes needed to progress and succeed in education and in work. Mechanical Engineering and Design will give students a chance to experience a wide range of Engineering disciples, where you will develop a much greater understanding of the world around you.

Units studied at depth in this subject include:

  • Mechanical Design
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Materials Science

The course consists of twelve units delivered and assessed over a two-year period with coursework and exam elements.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE grade 6 in Maths and English
  • GCSE grade 5 or above in DT or engineering would be an advantage but is not compulsory
  • This Technical Level 3 is recommended for those students wanting to progress onto university or advanced apprenticeship due to the level of maths included.
