SMSC

At UTC South Durham, we believe that the development of our students awareness and skills in areas of SMSC are paramount in not only developing well rounded, reflective young people, but also in preparing them to successfully manage the  responsibilities and experiences which lie ahead of them.

SMSC encompasses:

Spiritual: Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; using imagination and creativity; encouraging reflection.

Moral: Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views

Social: Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British values' of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.

Cultural: Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

At UTC South Durham, we have a commitment to encompassing SMSC in our teaching and learning with the responsibility of delivering SMSC in shared by all staff. This is supported by a Citizenship programme and collaborative work with external visitors.

SMSC is embedded into the curriculum here at UTC.
