The Application Process

Once you have applied, there is a clear process to go through. This is designed to make sure that you fully understand the UTC, have all your questions answered and that we know you so that we can support your needs when you join us:

Come and have a look

We have a number of open events where you can hear from Tom, be shown round the UTC by students, meet staff and business partners and ask any questions.  We also have smaller scale events for those who want to have another look round, can’t make the open events or apply late. Open events take place throughout the year see here for our upcoming events.

Accept the place

Once we reach our deadlines we will offer places to those who have applied.  In order to reserve your place you must formally accept the offer.  This is to ensure that you have thought properly about joining the UTC.

1:1 meeting

We will invite you to meet as a family with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.  You will be able to ask questions and we will find out more about you to make sure that we can provide the right education for you.  We will talk about curriculum and subject options, career interests and the practicalities of transport and dress code.  This may be followed by a meeting with our SENCO or Tom if required.

Next Steps, Taster Day and Induction day

  • Towards the end of the summer term we hold Next Steps events, at which you can try on and order uniform, confirm option choices and finalise travel arrangements
  • After GCSE exams finish, we have Post-16 taster days when you can come along and meet other students, understand the UTC ethos, make something in the Engineering Hall and try out some subject sessions
  • At the end of the summer term is our Year 10 Induction Day.  This consists of meeting other students and staff, understand the expectations and ethos of the UTC and complete our computer-based baseline test
